Construction worker dies at Barcelona’s Camp Nou renovation site

A 54-year-old construction worker has died while working on the ongoing redevelopment of Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium.

According to Catalan regional police, the incident occurred on Friday, marking the first fatal accident since renovation work on the iconic stadium began in June 2023.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call, but the worker could not be revived. Preliminary reports indicate that he died after suffering a severe blow.

An investigation into the incident is under way.

The Camp Nou rebuild began three years ago but was slowed by permit complications and complaints over working conditions among other factors.

The redevelopment project is currently focused in part on installing a compression ring designed to support the stadium’s roof structure.

The works are expected to be completed in early 2028.
