Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has sparked debate after sharing her views on men who complain about spending money on women in relationships. The 59-year-old actress said men have a responsibility to cater for the women they are dating and should not label them as “gold diggers” for expecting financial support.
Speaking during an interview, Wright argued that a man should naturally provide for his partner without waiting for her to ask.
According to her, “She doesn’t even need to ask you. It’s your responsibility as a man to know that, ‘My woman needs to wear good clothes. My woman needs to look good.’ Even if it is looking good for you as a man. She should be your pride. She should be your everything that you want to, you know, spend on.”
The actress also criticised men who describe women as gold diggers, insisting that there is nothing wrong with women expecting financial stability from their partners.
She said, “I h+te it when I hear men calling women gold diggers. What do you expect her to dig? Sh#t? No, I won’t… I won’t advise any woman to dig anything less than gold.”
When asked whether men who lack the financial capacity should stay away from relationships, Wright maintained that dating comes with responsibilities.
Responding to the question, she said, “Then don’t! Don’t date if you cannot afford it! Or you date according to your level.”
Her comments have since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians divided over whether financial provision should be considered a man’s primary responsibility in a relationship.
