Two firefighters have tragically died fighting a huge blaze at Bordeaux Airport, which grounded flights and shut down nearby roads
Flights at Bordeaux Airport were cancelled after a huge fire erupted nearby, killing two firefighters tackling the blaze and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air.
Local media reports that the fire broke out at a nearby building on Avenue Roland Garros, close to the airport’s car park, at around 2:30pm this afternoon, before quickly spreading across about one hectare of land.
France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that two firefighters had tragically perished while attempting to extinguish the massive blaze. Flights from the airport are gradually resuming after being grounded but passengers have been urged to check the status of their flights before travelling.
Firefighters remain at the scene as the fire continues to send thick black smoke into the sky.
French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the two firefighters killed in a post on X, writing: “Two firefighters lost their lives while responding to a fire in Mérignac.
“I extend to their families, to their loved ones, and to the firefighters of France the condolences, the gratitude, and the support of the Nation.”
Laurent Nuñez wrote on X: “The Nation bows before their courage and their commitment to protecting the French people.”
France has been gripped by a deadly heatwave in recent weeks that has resulted in wildfires, a public health crisis and over 2,000 deaths to date.
