The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deepen its collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) by leveraging the National Identification Number (NIN) to verify voter identities and prevent multiple voter registrations in future elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the disclosure on Wednesday while welcoming the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and members of her management team during a courtesy visit to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to Amupitan, integrating NIN verification into the voter registration process will improve the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system by ensuring that every registered voter has a unique identity.
He noted that the initiative is aimed at tackling duplicate registrations and strengthening the integrity of the national voters’ register.
He also stressed that closer cooperation between INEC and NIMC would enhance confidence in the electoral process and support the commission’s commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections.
Amupitan said the collaboration follows the signing of the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026.
According to him, INEC’s newly introduced online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform already requires applicants to provide their NIN for identity verification.
He added that closer integration with NIMC would make voter registration easier while improving the credibility of the electoral process.
“The Commission sees enormous opportunities for collaboration with NIMC, particularly in voter registration, data verification and the elimination of duplicate voter records,” Amupitan said.
