Nigerian comedian and popular skit maker Maryam Apaokagi, better known as Taaooma, has shared insights into the realities of being an entertainer while dealing with personal challenges away from the spotlight.
In a recent interview with PUNCH, the content creator was asked if she had ever experienced difficult periods in her private life while still being expected to entertain her audience.
Taaooma explained that such experiences are common among public figures because fans often see only the happiness and laughter they bring online, without knowing the struggles they may be handling behind the scenes.
“Life doesn’t stop because you have an audience,” she said, noting that there have been moments when she had to manage personal issues while continuing to create content, meet professional demands, and remain dedicated to her craft.
The comedian revealed that accepting her imperfections and recognising that she is human has helped her cope with the pressure that comes with fame. She also highlighted the role of a strong support system, saying the people around her have helped her realise that she does not have to carry every burden alone.
Aside from the emotional challenges of content creation, Taaooma also discussed the work that goes into bringing her widely loved characters to life. The skit maker, who is famous for portraying multiple personalities in her videos, explained that creating believable characters involves more than simply changing costumes or appearances.
According to her, each character requires a deep understanding of their attitude, mindset, and personality because audiences can quickly tell when a character lacks authenticity.
Taaooma revealed that many of her characters are drawn from real-life situations, personal experiences, and observations of people around her. She said growing up among Nigerians with diverse personalities and unique ways of expressing themselves has provided her with endless inspiration for her comedy.
When asked about the character she connects with the most, Taaooma mentioned Tao as the one that closely reflects her own personality.
She explained that although Tao is the easiest character for her to portray because of the similarities between them, every character she creates contains pieces of her experiences and the different people she has encountered over the years.
