The Jigawa State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the sudden death of a 60-year-old man who reportedly suffered a medical emergency at a hotel in Dutse, the state capital.
According to the police, the incident occurred at about 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday. The man had checked into the hotel alongside a 20-year-old woman before he suddenly developed breathing difficulties shortly after ordering a meal.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed in a statement that officers from the Yalwawa Police Division responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.
The victim was immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Dutse for medical attention. However, further details surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
He said medical personnel at the hospital examined the victim but later confirmed him dead.
“The police immediately secured the scene and carried out a preliminary investigation. During the exercise, detectives recovered some food items, beverages, a suspected sexual enhancement substance, and other personal belongings for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation,” the statement said.
The police spokesman said all necessary procedures were followed to preserve the exhibits and ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to him, the deceased’s remains were released to his family for burial after medical certification of death and completion of the necessary procedures.
The police also disclosed that the 20-year-old woman who was with the deceased at the time of the incident is cooperating with investigators by providing information that could help establish the sequence of events leading to the man’s death.
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State assured residents that the investigation would be conducted professionally, thoroughly and impartially.
He urged members of the public to refrain from spreading rumours or unverified information that could create unnecessary panic or interfere with the ongoing investigation.
The police added that further details would be made public as the investigation progresses.
