The Southern Political Progressives Amalgamation Forum (SPPAF) has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its 2027 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to immediately replace former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the party’s vice presidential candidate.
The group made the demand in a statement jointly signed by its leaders, Anga Fidelis, Eniafe Ayomide, and Johnson Iheanachor, arguing that Amaechi lacks the grassroots political strength required to help the party secure victory in the 2027 presidential election.
According to the forum, the former Rivers governor has failed to demonstrate the widespread political influence and voter mobilization capacity needed to boost the ADC’s chances at both the regional and national levels. It maintained that the party should field a running mate with stronger grassroots acceptance and broader electoral appeal.
The group also accused Amaechi of acting out of political desperation, alleging that his interest in the vice presidential position was driven more by personal ambition than by the collective interests of the party. It warned that retaining him on the ticket could weaken the ADC’s electoral prospects and reduce its competitiveness against rival political parties.
SPPAF urged the ADC leadership to carry out a thorough reassessment of its vice presidential choice and select a candidate capable of uniting different political blocs, attracting undecided voters, and strengthening the party’s nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 general election.
The call comes as political consultations, alliances, and internal realignments continue to intensify across Nigeria’s political landscape, with parties making strategic moves in preparation for the next presidential election.
While neither the ADC, Atiku Abubakar, nor Rotimi Amaechi had publicly responded to the group’s demand at the time of the statement, the development has added another dimension to the growing political conversations surrounding the party’s preparations for the 2027 polls.
