A popular Nigerian pastor, Apostle Emmanuel Iren of Celebration Church International, has sparked massive reactions online after claiming that the superhero Superman is a “fallen angel” and a “demon” disguised through storytelling.
In a sermon clip that went viral on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the pastor said: “Superman the superhero is a fallen angel. His real name is Kal El. Mention the names of angel that you know; Michael, Gabriel. See they all end with ‘El’. He is a demon they made you love with storytelling. Apostle Iren, whose church is based in Lagos, used the example during his teaching to warn Christians about the spiritual influence of movies and cartoons. He pointed out that Superman’s story starts with him falling to earth, linking it to the idea of fallen angels. He also compared other characters like Thor to traditional deities.
