Several members of Nigeria’s Super Falcons have reportedly fallen victim to a theft incident at their team hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, just days before the start of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The players are said to have discovered that cash kept in their wallets had gone missing after returning to their hotel rooms.
This incident has raised concerns within the camp as preparations intensify for the continental tournament.
The Nigerian team is currently lodged at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, where they have been holding their final training sessions ahead of the competition.
Reports from the camp indicate that a number of players noticed discrepancies in the money they had left among their personal belongings. The missing funds were allegedly discovered at different times by the affected players.
Among those reportedly affected is forward Esther Okoronkwo, who is said to have lost $700.
Moreover, the team captain Rasheedat Ajibade reportedly discovered that $200 was missing from her belongings, while experienced defender Osinachi Ohale allegedly lost $100.
Midfielder Joy Omewa is also said to be missing $120, while fellow midfielder Halimatu Ayinde reportedly lost $100.
The total amount allegedly stolen from the affected players stands at $1,220, an amount estimated at over N1.7 million.
This news has brought concern within the squad as the players focus on preparations for the tournament. Team officials are understood to have been informed about the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had not released any official statement regarding the incident. There has also been no confirmation on whether a formal investigation has been launched.
The Super Falcons arrived in Casablanca earlier this month and have been using the city as their training base ahead of their move to Rabat for the championship.
Nigeria heads into the tournament as defending champions and one of the favourites for the title.
The team is seeking to extend its dominance in African women’s football by securing another continental crown.
The Falcons have been drawn in Group C, where they will face Malawi, Zambia and Egypt during the group stage.
In July, Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu admitted that defending Nigeria’s continental title would not be an easy task as the team prepared for another WAFCON campaign in Morocco.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, the coach acknowledged the expectations surrounding the African champions and stressed that every team would be eager to dethrone Nigeria.
“We are holding something precious that everybody wants, but we will remain resolute and focused and try as much as possible to achieve both objectives. So, there’s a huge burden on us,” Madugu said.
The coach also urged his players to maintain discipline throughout the competition.
“We need to be careful with what we do wherever we are because we must set a good example and try to be exemplary in everything we do,” he added.
The Super Falcons are entering the competition with the objective of retaining their African crown and securing qualification for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
