Nigerian talent manager and music executive Ubi Franklin has shared the difficult experience of losing more than ₦1 billion in a business investment that failed before it could fully begin.
Franklin revealed the story on July 22, 2026, through his Instagram page as part of his Talks with Ubi Franklin podcast series, where he discusses business, entrepreneurship, and personal lessons.
According to the music executive, the venture started from a growing customer base in the laundry service industry. After noticing strong demand, he decided to expand the business by establishing a large-scale industrial laundry company.
To bring the idea to life, Franklin travelled to Italy to purchase industrial-grade equipment, acquired a property, and committed significant resources toward setting up the operation.
However, challenges emerged before the machines even arrived in Nigeria. He explained that difficulties with port clearance and documentation resulted in costly delays and demurrage fees, preventing the equipment from reaching the country on time.
By the time the issues were eventually resolved, Franklin said the business opportunity had already disappeared. The delay affected cash flow, the market timing was lost, and the venture could no longer continue as planned.
Reflecting on the experience, the entrepreneur explained that business failures do not always happen because an idea is poor or because there was a lack of effort. He noted that external factors such as timing, logistics challenges, and unexpected setbacks can affect even well-planned ventures.
Franklin also used the experience to share a message with business owners about knowing when to let go. He warned against allowing pride, pressure, or the money already invested to keep people trapped in failing ventures.
“Don’t let pride, pressure, or sunk costs keep you in something that’s costing you your peace, your health, or your future. It’s better to leave the business than to let the business bury you,” he advised.
