  • Shakira discussed Burna Boy’s role in her song “Dai Dai,” the official anthem for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • She emphasized that his inclusion was based on the desired sound and energy for the track.
  • The musical direction of “Dai Dai” naturally aligned with Burna Boy’s style, leading to his collaboration.

Shakira has revealed how Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy secured his place on Dai Dai, the official anthem for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, explaining that his inclusion was driven by the sound and energy she wanted for the track.

Speaking during an interview on the Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill, the Colombian singer said the musical direction of the song naturally led her to the Grammy-winning Nigerian artiste.

According to Shakira, Dai Dai blends different genres, with Afrobeats serving as its foundation while incorporating elements of Caribbean and R&B music. She explained that she needed a male vocalist who could bring a strong and powerful presence to match the spirit of the World Cup.

“Once I had the song, I felt that I really needed a male vocal, a male voice in the song. The World Cup carries a big male energy, you know? And so I was like, who can give me that very masculine voice that I want in this sort of like Afrobeats setting?” she said.

The international star revealed that she had admired Burna Boy’s music for years before the collaboration opportunity came up, adding that she had always hoped to work with him.

“I always loved Burna. I always wanted to do something with him,” Shakira stated.

She disclosed that contacting the Nigerian singer was easy, as Burna Boy accepted the opportunity, but fans had to wait before hearing his contribution. Shakira revealed that it took almost three weeks before he sent in his part of the song.

“It took a while. I was waiting for 20 days for him to send something. And I’m like, ‘Okay, maybe he’s not going to do it,” she recalled.

However, the wait was worth it, as Shakira said Burna Boy’s delivery exceeded her expectations and perfectly matched the track’s sound.

“But then he sent his magic and it was just absolutely perfect. I think his voice is just… It works so well on this song. So well. I couldn’t imagine anybody else on it, actually,” she said.

The singer further revealed that having Burna Boy on the World Cup anthem was something she was determined to make happen.

“I was so obsessed about having Burna on this track. I’m so glad that I got him,” Shakira added.
