Nigeria rolls out single gateway for government services

The Federal Government has launched the Government Service Portal (GSP), a digital platform that enables Nigerians to access multiple government services through a single online gateway, as part of efforts to improve public service delivery and the ease of doing business.

The portal, soft-launched in Abuja on Tuesday, was developed by Galaxy Backbone in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

The platform is designed to reduce the need for citizens and businesses to visit multiple government websites or offices to access services. Users will be able to sign in once and access an expanding range of services through a single portal.

Government officials said the initiative would reduce service delays, eliminate duplication of information across agencies, improve transparency and strengthen accountability.

Speaking at the launch, Nadungu Gagare, permanent secretary of the ministry, represented by Johnson Bareyi, director of e-Government, said the portal is one of the flagship projects under Nigeria’s e-Government Masterplan 2.0.

“Our mandate is not simply to deploy technology but to use technology to improve governance and public service delivery,” Gagare said.

He said the portal supports the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda, including the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy and the Digital Public Infrastructure programme.

The platform will integrate with the Nigerian Digital Exchange, allowing authorised government agencies to share information securely and reducing the need for citizens to submit the same documents to multiple institutions.

Gagare urged ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to integrate their digital services into the platform to expand access to government services.

Ibrahim Adeyanju, managing director of Galaxy Backbone, said the portal addresses the challenge of fragmented government services by providing citizens and businesses with a single platform to access public services.

He said the portal forms part of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure and complements existing digital identity, payment and government data exchange systems.

According to Adeyanju, the soft launch will onboard selected MDAs, gather user feedback and allow improvements before nationwide deployment.

User acceptance testing conducted across the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory produced positive results, according to Olumbe Akinkugbe, executive director of Digital Exploration and Technical Services at Galaxy Backbone.

He said 184 participants took part in the exercise, with more than 80 percent describing the platform as easy to use.

About 88 percent successfully located government services, while 71 percent rated the platform’s performance as fast or very fast.

Akinkugbe said 91 percent of participants indicated they would use the portal, while 99 percent said they would recommend it to others.

He said feedback from the pilot identified areas for improvement, including user registration, image capture and one-time password (OTP) delivery.

Galaxy Backbone plans to strengthen the platform’s security, improve system performance, onboard additional MDAs and introduce email and WhatsApp verification during the pilot phase.

Officials said more government agencies would be integrated into the platform over time, expanding the range of services available through the portal.

KOICA described the portal as the flagship outcome of the four-year Building Foundations Towards Digital Governance in Nigeria project between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea.

Baik Ki-hyun, KOICA’s senior deputy country director, said continued collaboration would be necessary to sustain the platform and advance digital governance in Nigeria.
