AMAOKPALA — Two bodies have been recovered from the rubble and three victims rushed to the hospital following the late-night collapse of a three-storey student lodge in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The structure, known as Elite Five Star Lodge, caved in on Sunday night, July 26, 2026, triggering emergency rescue operations by local youths, community leaders, and state response teams.
Initial Rescue and Community Response
Local youths in Amaokpala mobilized for immediate search-and-rescue efforts shortly after receiving distress alerts from Youth Chairman Mr. Ifeanyi Nwafor and Financial Secretary Mr. Uchenna Eze.
During the initial phase of the operation, three injured individuals were brought out alive from the debris and taken to a private hospital in neighboring Oko for medical attention.
State Intervention and Escalated Operations
Heavy earth-moving equipment—including caterpillars, bulldozers, and evacuation trucks—was deployed to the disaster site on Monday morning, July 27, by the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Anambra State Fire Service, and joint security forces.

As excavation intensified through the debris, rescue workers recovered two dead bodies. Search-and-rescue teams continue to clear sections of the rubble to ensure all trapped occupants are accounted for.
Government Action & Investigation
While residents and eyewitnesses suggested that ongoing road construction and severe erosion near the express road may have contributed to the structural failure, preliminary findings by state authorities point toward structural defects and compromises during construction.
The Anambra State Government has since sealed the site. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, announced an immediate investigation into the developer and property managers regarding compliance with building codes and physical planning regulations.
