The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olapegba as the institution’s 14th Vice Chancellor.
His appointment was announced on Wednesday following the conclusion of the selection process conducted by the university’s Governing Council.
In a statement made available on Wednesday, the Pro-Chancellor of the university, Chief Bisi Akande, disclosed that five shortlisted candidates were interviewed before the council reached its decision.
Professor Olapegba will take over the leadership of Nigeria’s premier university as its 14th Vice Chancellor, following the completion of the appointment process.
Akande, a former governor of Osun State, said that Olapegba emerged after the rigorous exercise.
Akande said: “At the end of the exercise, two additional applications were received and this brought the number of the applicants to eight (8). On Tuesday, 21 July 2026, the Council interacted with all eight (8) candidates.
“Today Wednesday, 22 July 2026, the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed the five (5) candidates shortlisted. At the end of a very thorough, transparent and highly competitive exercise, Professor Peter Olarnakinde Olapegba emerged as the best candidate for the position of Vice Chancellor”.
The Leader Nigeria gathered that the newly appointed VC has earlier served as Deputy Vice Chancellor, DVC administration.
It was learnt that Olapegba lectures in the department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences. The new VC is expected to assume office on 1st December this year.
The Leader Nigeria gathered that Olapegba contested against other candidates among whom are Professor Adeyinka Aderinto from Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor Adebola Ekanola who had earlier served as Acting Vice Chancellor of the university from the Faculty of Arts and other candidates.
