The United States has condemned the killing of members of the family of Plateau-based cleric, Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo, calling for a thorough investigation and the prosecution of those responsible.
In a statement issued by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs, the U.S. government described the attack as a disturbing act of violence and extended its condolences to the bereaved family.
The bureau urged Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard Christian communities and other vulnerable residents in the Middle Belt, stressing the need to address the recurring attacks on innocent civilians.
“The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria. The continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming. Those responsible must be held accountable, and urgent measures are needed to strengthen security and protect vulnerable communities,” the statement read.
The condemnation follows the July 12 attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where armed assailants reportedly killed nine members of Rev. Dachomo’s extended family, including a two-month-old infant.

Speaking after the incident, Rev. Dachomo alleged that the attackers specifically asked for him before carrying out the killings. He claimed his family had become a target because of his outspoken stance against the persistent violence affecting communities in Plateau State.
The cleric also disclosed that he received a written death threat shortly after burying his relatives, raising further concerns about his safety.
The United States reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, while emphasising that all citizens should be able to practise their faith without fear of violence or persecution.
