Marvel Studios recently unveiled David Jonsson, a British Nigerian actor, as the new Black Panther, cast as T’Challa’s adult son, T’Challa II, in the Black Panther 3 movie, scheduled for release on December 15, 2028.
He was recently announced as the new actor playing the role at the 2026 Comic-Con event by Ryan Coogler, who directed the first 2 movies. He replaced Chadwick Bosman who died of colon cancer after playing the role for four Marvel movies.
The announcement ended years of speculation over who would carry one of Marvel’s most recognisable characters into its next phase. Rather than choosing an established blockbuster star, Ryan Coogler, the director, and Marvel Studios opted for Johnson, an actor whose performances in the industry have earned him a reputation for bringing emotional depth and quiet intensity to his roles.
Born in London to a Swedish mother and a Nigerian father, Jonsson did not become a household name overnight. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), he built his career through television and theatre before landing bigger film roles.
His performances in Rye Lane and Industry showed an actor comfortable moving between romance, drama and science fiction, earning praise for his natural screen presence.
With Marvel placing him at the centre of Black Panther 3, the conversation is no longer only about another superhero film. It is about what it means to inherit a story that millions of people already treat like memory.
