Controversial Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale has expressed disappointment over what he described as the poor level of appreciation Ghanaians show to their entertainers compared to Nigerians.
Speaking during a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, the singer said many celebrities in Ghana receive little financial reward for their work despite being widely recognized.
According to him, entertainers in Ghana often earn very little, leaving many of them to struggle financially even after achieving fame.
Reflecting on his early career, Shatta Wale revealed that he faced serious financial challenges despite already being a popular figure.
He said he relied on taxis to attend performances and lived with his girlfriend at her parents’ house because he could not afford his own accommodation.
He said, “Nigerians appreciate success, Ghana doesn’t appreciate success. As a star, I was sleeping on the street as big as I am. At one point, my girlfriend who was living with her parents’ was the one accommodating me.
“Even as a big Ghanaian artist, back then, I take taxis to shows. Not just me, a lot of Ghanaian artists do that. Ghanaian artists earn pennies, while their Nigerian counterparts earn big.”
Shatta Wale urged his Ghanaian colleagues to learn from their Nigerian counterparts and set high standards in their industry.
