A Kisii woman who spent six years behind bars over the death of her stepmother has finally opened up about the shocking chain of events that turned an ordinary evening into a life-altering tragedy.
Keremensia Nyamoita recalls that on May 25, 2020, she was heading home after a successful day at the market. She had sold all her goods earlier than expected and looked forward to a quiet evening, unaware that her life was about to change forever. Watch Video Here ➜
When she arrived home, she found the door closed but heard voices coming from inside. Thinking nothing of it, she opened the door, walked in, and placed her shopping down.
Moments later, her husband emerged from the bedroom.
His presence immediately caught her attention because he rarely returned home that early. When she asked why he was home, he explained that he had become tired at work and decided to come home to rest. He also questioned why she had returned earlier than usual, and she told him she had finished selling everything at the market.
Then came the sound that changed everything.
Keremensia says she heard a noise coming from the bedroom and instinctively moved to find out what was happening. Her husband tried to stop her, standing in her way and asking where she was going.
Before she could push past him, the woman hiding inside stepped out.
“I was shocked,” Keremensia recalled. “I asked, ‘Auntie, what are you doing here?’ She simply answered, ‘Nothing.’”
The woman, she says, was her own stepmother.
Overcome with anger and disbelief, Keremensia rushed toward her to confront her. Her husband quickly stepped between the two women in an attempt to separate them, but the confrontation spiraled out of control within seconds.
During the struggle, Keremensia pushed her stepmother. The woman lost her balance, fell backward, and struck her forehead against the edge of a table.
The head injury proved fatal.
Police arrested Keremensia, and she was later convicted over her stepmother’s death. She served a six-year prison sentence before finally regaining her freedom.
Now out of prison, Keremensia says she is speaking publicly for the first time to share her version of the tragic events that unfolded inside her home that evening—an incident that she says destroyed her family and changed the course of her life forever.
